You might have heard that Victoria has introduced a new Graduated Licensing System (GLS).
Here are some of the changes which will affect your learner drivers.
From 1 July 2007
- Learner drivers who will be under the age of 21 when they apply for a licence will be required to complete a learner log book and to gain a minimum of 120 hours of driving experience.
- Learner drivers are prohibited to use a mobile phone of any kind.
- Learner drivers who apply for their licence prior to turning 21 years of age will need to hold their learner permit for a minimum period of 12 months.
- Changed high-powered vehicle restrictions have been imposed on P plate holders.
From 1 July 2008
- A new on road driving test will be introduced.
- A two stage probationary licence will begin.
- Stage one is a one year P1 probationary licence (with red P plates).
- Stage two is a three year P2 probationary licence (with green P plates).
- P1 drivers are prohibited from using a mobile phone of any kind.
- P1 drivers are banned from towing, except for work or when supervised.
- P1 drivers can carry no more than one passenger aged at least 16 and less than 22.
- A good driving record will be necessary to progress to the next licence stage.
