Remember these rules for learners:
- You must complete at least 120 hours of supervised driving practice, including 10 hours at night, before you apply for a probationary licence.
- These hours must be recorded correctly in the Learner Log Book.
- If you are under 21 years, you must stay on your learner permit for at least 12 months before you can apply for a probationary licence. If you are aged 21 to 24 you must stay on your learner permit for at least six months, or if you are 25 years or older, for at least three months.
- You must have a zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC) whenever you drive. That means you can’t drink and then drive.
- You must always drive with a supervisor who is fully licenced.
- Your supervisor must have a BAC under .05 whenever they drive with you.
- You must display your yellow L plates on the front and back of any car you drive.
- You must carry your learner permit with you whenever you drive.
- You can’t use a mobile phone while you drive. That includes hands free, hand held or messaging of any kind.
- You can’t tow any other vehicles or trailers.
- If you incur five or more demerit points in 12 months, or 12 or more in three years, then your learner permit may be suspended.
